The game pits two teams, Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists, against each other in various objective-based game modes. The most common game modes are Terrorists planting a bomb while Counter-Terrorists try to stop them, or Counter-Terrorists trying to rescue hostages captured by the Terrorists. There are nine official game modes, all of which have features specific to that mode. The game also features matchmaking support that allows players to play on dedicated Valve servers, in addition to community-hosted servers with custom maps and game modes. Dota 2 is played in matches of two teams with five players each. Each team has its own base, 'the Ancient', in a corner of the playing field. The team in the bottom left corner is called Radiant and the team in the top right corner is called Dire. The game ends when one of the Ancients is destroyed. Each player controls 1 character, also called "Hero", throughout the game. A total of 116 Heroes are available. During the match, players must collect gold and experience so that they can buy better items and level up. With these items and levels they can then try to take out enemy players.

In Valorant two teams of five players each compete against each other, taking on the role of "agents" with unique skills. An economic system is used to purchase weapons and skills. In classic mode, the attacking team must place a bomb, called a "Spike", at a specific location. If the attacking team places the Spike successfully protects and detonates the Spike, they win the round and earn a point. If the defending team places the Spike successfully defuses the Spike or if the 100-second timer expires before the bomb is placed, the defending team wins the round and receives one point. If the attackers eliminate all defending team members, they win a round. Similarly, the defending team wins if they eliminate all attacking team members. The first team to win the majority of the 25 rounds wins the match should the 2 teams both win 12 rounds, the first team to win by 2 rounds wins.
